Background of the Study
The learning environment plays a crucial role in shaping the academic performance and cognitive focus of students. For nursing students, the ability to focus during lectures is fundamental for the acquisition of essential knowledge and skills required in clinical practice (Olatunji & Durojaiye, 2024). Environmental factors such as classroom lighting, noise levels, seating arrangement, temperature, and overall comfort have been shown to significantly impact students' concentration, retention of information, and academic performance (Adamu & Saleh, 2025). A conducive learning environment not only enhances students' focus but also facilitates better interaction between lecturers and students, contributing to a more effective learning experience.
In Federal Polytechnic, Bauchi, the physical environment of nursing classrooms has been subject to varying degrees of control and modification, but little is known about how these environmental factors affect students' ability to focus during lectures. Understanding how different elements of the classroom environment impact focus could lead to improvements in teaching strategies and classroom setups, ultimately enhancing students' academic outcomes. This study will explore the effect of environmental factors on nursing students' ability to maintain focus during lectures, considering the specific conditions in the institution.
Statement of the Problem
Nursing students at Federal Polytechnic, Bauchi, face several challenges in maintaining focus during lectures, including environmental factors like noise, poor lighting, and uncomfortable seating. Despite the growing body of research on the importance of a supportive learning environment, there is limited empirical data regarding how these environmental conditions affect students' concentration in nursing programs. This study aims to investigate the relationship between environmental factors and students' ability to focus during nursing lectures, with the goal of providing recommendations for improving classroom conditions.
Objectives of the Study
1. To examine the effect of environmental factors on nursing students' ability to focus during lectures at Federal Polytechnic, Bauchi.
2. To identify specific environmental factors that have the greatest impact on students' concentration during nursing lectures.
3. To recommend strategies for optimizing the learning environment to improve focus and academic performance.
Research Questions
1. How do environmental factors affect nursing students' ability to focus during lectures at Federal Polytechnic, Bauchi?
2. Which environmental factors are most influential in determining students' concentration during nursing lectures?
3. What strategies can be implemented to improve the learning environment and enhance focus during nursing lectures?
Research Hypotheses
1. Environmental factors, such as noise, lighting, and temperature, significantly affect nursing students' ability to focus during lectures.
2. There is a significant relationship between the physical comfort of the classroom environment and students' concentration levels.
3. Improving the learning environment will lead to better focus and academic outcomes among nursing students.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on nursing students at Federal Polytechnic, Bauchi, and will consider various classroom environmental factors, such as lighting, noise, seating arrangement, and temperature. Limitations include the subjective nature of self-reported focus and the inability to control for other factors that may affect concentration, such as personal stress or health conditions.
Definitions of Terms
• Environmental Factors: Elements of the physical environment, such as lighting, noise, temperature, and seating arrangement, that can influence students' learning and concentration.
• Focus: The ability to maintain attention and mental clarity during lectures, essential for effective learning.
• Nursing Students: Individuals enrolled in a nursing program at Federal Polytechnic, Bauchi, who are in the process of gaining the knowledge and skills necessary to become professional nurses.
